The Charlotte 49ers unveiled a crisp, white helmet speckled with 49ers green as the official helmet for the upstart program today during a ceremony overlooking the nearly completed football stadium.
"We are really excited about this look," said 49ers head coach Brad Lambert. "We have put a lot of effort into highlighting our brand - and the logo really pops off this helmet. And from a truly football side, we showed several versions to our recruiting class, and this white look was the overwhelming favorite."
UNC Charlotte’s football program will begin competition as an FCS independent in fall 2013 with the inaugural game scheduled for Aug. 31 against Campbell University on the McColl-Richardson Field of the 49ers football stadium. This fall, the Charlotte 49ers will work out, practice and scrimmage in preparation for kickoff in 2013.
"This is a great time for our program," said Lambert, who anticipates moving into new offices in the stadium’s Halton Field House with his staff in August. "The pieces are coming together. In less than a month, we will have our student-athletes on campus. Pretty soon workouts will be under way. Everything we have been building for and planning for is getting closer and closer."
Currently, the Charlotte 49ers are members of the Atlantic 10 Conference. In May, the 49ers announced their move to Conference USA, an FBS conference, effective for the 2013-14 season, with football beginning league competition in 2015.
